Disclaimer & Terms of Use
Effective date: 2026 · ODINN AIS / Erlendur Gíslason
ODINN AIS is a local maritime monitoring and evidence-support system. AIS data is dependent on vessel transmissions, receiver coverage, equipment status, and network availability. The system is not approved for navigation, collision avoidance, or emergency response. Incident reports should be reviewed together with other operational, legal, and technical evidence.
1. Purpose of the System
ODINN AIS collects, stores, and displays AIS (Automatic Identification System) messages received by the local receiver network. The system is designed to support:
- Maritime area awareness and vessel monitoring
- Operational review and incident investigation
- Evidence support in conjunction with other documentation
- KPI and voyage analysis for registered operators
2. Not for Navigation or Emergency Use
ODINN AIS is not approved or intended for use as a primary navigation aid, collision-avoidance system, or search-and-rescue tool. Do not rely solely on this system for any safety-critical decision at sea. Always follow proper maritime regulations and use certified navigation equipment.
3. Limitations of AIS Data
AIS data has inherent technical limitations that users must understand:
- Not all vessels transmit AIS. IMO carriage requirements apply to vessels above certain sizes; smaller craft, fishing vessels, and recreational boats may not carry AIS transponders.
- Transmission gaps. AIS messages may be lost due to VHF signal range, interference, antenna obstruction, receiver downtime, or network failures.
- Data accuracy. Position, speed, course, and vessel identity data are self-reported by the vessel's own AIS transponder. Manually entered data (vessel name, MMSI, call sign) may contain errors.
- AIS spoofing. False or manipulated AIS transmissions are a recognised risk. ODINN AIS records what is received; it does not independently verify the authenticity of transmissions.
- Time synchronisation. All timestamps are recorded in UTC. Local time display depends on the user's browser or device settings.
- Coverage area. The system only records vessels within the VHF reception range of the installed receiver network. Vessels outside this area will not appear.
4. Not an Official Record
ODINN AIS is not an official maritime authority record and does not replace records maintained by coastguard, port authority, or flag state authorities. AIS data preserved by this system may support an investigation but does not alone determine legal responsibility, fault, or compliance.
Any use of ODINN AIS data in legal, insurance, or regulatory proceedings should be accompanied by appropriate expert review and other corroborating evidence.
5. System Availability
Continuous operation of ODINN AIS depends on a chain of hardware and infrastructure components including antennas, receivers, power supply, internet connectivity, and server availability. ODINN AIS does not guarantee uninterrupted service or zero data gaps. Users should not assume that an absence of AIS records means a vessel was absent from the coverage area — it may reflect a system gap.
6. Data Retention and Access
Access to ODINN AIS is restricted to authorised users. Raw AIS data, vessel tracks, KPI reports, and incident logs are retained according to the system operator's data management policy. Users are responsible for handling exported data in accordance with applicable data protection laws.
7. Limitation of Liability
To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, ODINN AIS and its operator accept no liability for:
- Decisions made on the basis of incomplete, delayed, or inaccurate AIS data
- Loss of data resulting from system outages or infrastructure failure
- Consequences arising from AIS spoofing or transmission errors
- Any use of system data in navigation, collision avoidance, or emergency response

These terms may be updated from time to time. Continued use of the system following any update constitutes acceptance of the revised terms.
